España Cañí – meaning ‘Gypsy Spain’ is a famous guitar instrumental piece of pasodoble music by Pascual Marquina Narro written in the early 1920s. It has become so well known and synonymous with the dance that it is often referred to as the ‘Pasodoble Song’, being covered by plenty of musicians of different disciplines from Guitarists through to the André Riu Orchestra. This was arranged for the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Trumpet Ensemble in 2018.
Featuring classic Spanish Phrygian harmonies, a bold strong dance pulse, staccato arpeggiated riffs and powerful egoistic melodies, this piece lies perfectly on the trumpet and is an absolute joy to play! It would act perfectly as an opener, finisher or even encore to any concert repertoire.
This piece would also suit being scaled down and simplified, so get in contact if you have a different line up!
