Grieg wrote 66 Lyric pieces for solo piano, and this collection is of 3 stunning examples. The first movement is a powerful and noble Fatherland Song, announcing in a national anthem style. The soulful, chromatic and bleak Elegy then follows, with plenty of space and Scandinavian style ornamentation. The final movement is a waltzing minor folk song which dances itself to a mysterious and distant finish. These movements are very accessible for both the audience and the performers. Without being too demanding to play, they offer an amazing collection of music to test a groups ensemble skills, breathing, leading and following.
